Travel Tales

Travel tales

You’re mostly defensive at times, trying to be as silent as possible, unnoticed, undisturbed, trying to put up a defensive outlook towards your surroundings.
But the best of the moments does occur when your least expecting it. This is one such instance I felt worth penning down.

It just happened on a weekday, the routine stuff. Winded up work by 6:30 and started the journey back home. The journey that is described better an epic one. The traffic snarls in the city make it quite a journey that lasts for 1.5-2 hours on an average for a distance of 20kms.

The Bus driver who had been changed this day was a new face on the route. I royally claimed the front seat, reasoning attributed to superior leg space. Being in the first seat, I was automatically elevated to a role of “Nagivator” for this new driver.

The guy appeared to me like a rough one. Unshaved beard, Paan or Ghutka or whatever he chewed, he spat on the road through the window. Abused a random Commuter who climbed the bus assuming it to be a BMTC Bus on the normal route. I didn expect to be talking to this Character for the rest of the journey at all although it happened eventually.

As I got on with instructing routes to this driver, I just asked which his usual route was, just to have an idea which part of Bangalore does this driver usually drive in?
He said “189”.

Phat!!!, I clearly knew this route. The bus that ply’s from JP Nagar 3rd Phase to Mahalakshmi Layout. Having stayed at JP nagar for 16 years of my life, it was easy for me to recognize the route. The driver appeared much excited about his experience on the same route for 16 years.

As we got on talking about 189, we started exchanging our thoughts about the bus routes of the yesteryears, the traffic situations then. This person for whom i felt alienation initially had actually instigated me to think back 10 years and how I had travelled in ease at BMTC buses then. Both of us seem to have so much facts and data that any memories about the bus routes that i put across to him was readily acknowledged and agreed upon.

For someone like me who’s been Bangalore for all his life, the city seems to entice with time, the face of the city adorns different looks (mostly Deteriorating at times! :-(
So as i wondered back through the years I seem to recollect a lot of things that have changed, or changed the way they function.

We coherently discussed so many changes, for instance the guy complained that 10 year back the travel time from Mahalakshmi lyt to JP Nagar was a mere 1 hour , while it now takes 3 hours L. I did recollect that the first Signal that had to be encountered after the bus left JP Nagar was the one in 3rd Block while now the bus may have to already surpass 5-6 Signals before passing through 3rd Block.

It was funny to recollect some of the memories that were fond to me, like travelling with ½ Ticket all alone. The Conductor used to give a weird stare every time i pressed for a ½ ticket be given. Travelling from Jayanagar to JP nagar was mostly free as my Student pass was also issued along the same route.

The driver seem to express much despair that once upon a time he was comfortably able to live up to the stipulated travel time all along the day, and people used to wait for his bus with firm hopes that the bus shall arrive and leave at the designated time, he sadly vents his ire that such a situation is no longer prevalent and people have given in to using daily and monthly passes to be able to hop from one bus to another to reach any destination.

It seem to suddenly get a feeling that had i already lived a mammoth years that i  see such drastic changes in the way city and the transport system in the city runs, the driver was the carrier who got me thinking about such  thought.

Before i got thinking into more things, my stop arrived. I bid a warm good bye to the the friendly driver Mr. Hanumantha and got down.

La Tomatino in Bangalore Finally called off

So Finally after all the uproar, Cry and a spate of objections the Govt. of Karnataka has finally called off the much debated event "La Tomatino" in Bangalore. The Chief Minister Opines that the Tomato which is an important crop for an Indian Farmer has to be looked upon with much reverence and should not be wasted in this manner. I do agree with his statements, In a country like ours where we see our food with great respect, spurting tomatos on each other would be an event that is sure looked upon with a bad taste.

But i wonder on all the facebook posts that have been cropping up on my friends walls on why exactly we should be Opposing the " La tomatino" One of these read as below

Dear Bangaloreans.. Please boycott the 'La Tomatina' festival to be held in Palace grounds on the 18th of September. Its a Royal waste of food !!.. Which could actually be used to feed those 5.6 million children who die of malnutrition every year :-\. Like . .if u agree and help cancel this depiction of fake westernization.. Go on.. Put it up as your status

I really Wonder how many of these people who posted this status on their walls are really concerned about feeding the 5.6 Million kids who die of Malnutrition. ????????
So if this is the sole reason that they wanna boycott the event, are they ready to instead donate the 1.2K Rupees ( Entry for the event) to Charity.

I Could clearly bet a "No" on the vast majority of people posting these messages. So Guys Please don't post a message just because it looks appropriate, or it appeals to you.

We(Including me) need to clearly assert that we are in most cases among the greedy lot, who would never care about the rest of the population Lets not try to earn an additional mileage taking stands on situations for which we have not acted any good.

The Saddle, The Pedal and The Wheel- The Cycling trip to Mysore

KHS ALITE 150

It had been over a month since my new bike (AKA Cycle) KHS Alite 150 was bought. This beauty in the red imported straightly from the US and had been a pleasure on the road. The extra wide handle bars, the light frame, the smooth Gear Shifts and the wide tires were just a perfect combination to take on Bangalore roads. I had been doing short city trips. The Handling conditions and ride this beauty offered was a delight. Cutting across major traffic bottlenecks, jumping signals, occasionally getting over the foot paths gave a rush of momentum and a knock of adrenaline that a 2 wheeler/4 wheeler failed to induce in a rider driving inside the city. However the bike was yet to be tested on a long drive.
My mind had been hatching a bike trip to Mysore for some time now, which had apparently run into trouble for obvious reasons of fear of fitness, endurance and the confidence obviously to pedal that long distance. The new bike had brought in more seriousness about biking and the comfort it offered to the driver along with the smooth gear shift instilled much needed confidence to embark on SH-17, on the journey to Mysore.

So here we were on the early morning of 30th July 2011, the day when we set sail to mysore with our bikes. Rajesh arrived at Raja Rajeshwari Arch, the starting point for our trip late by 30 mins which meant we flagged off by around 6.15 AM. The 4 lane road with wide dividers is by far one of the best state highways existing in Karnataka. There was no complaining on the road, yet the speeding cars and buses meant that we need to position and drive our cycles towards the absolute left side of the road. It also meant that it was very important that we held our handle bars firm, unless didn’t wanna be knocked down by an overtaking bus or car trying to be casual.

Lap1:
Arc- Bidadi

The early morning ride, cool weather, relatively less traffic, no sun, no winds, lot of energy which meant we kept a good speed of 25-30kmphr. The ups and downs went unnoticed with body pumping a good rate of energy on the pedals. The saddle appeared like a comfortable seat.
We stopped by Bidadi for Tatte Idli which every other hotel in this area flaunts about being an expert in preparing. The tasty idli with crisp Vada easily made their way in. After a delicious filling breakfast, we hit back on the road not wanting to waste anymore time.

Lap2:
Bidadi-Maddur

The golden hour for cycling had come to an end, the sun was slowly getting up the horizon, Sunglasses had to be pulled out from the bag, Music makes for a good company (The right Music!!), slowly the ups and downs could be felt from now on as we near the 80kms mark, yet there was no feeling of exhaustion, we kept the pedal on rotation and soon hit Maddur by 10 AM.
A bottle of Maaza at the second pit stop.

Lap 3:
Maddur- Nandini ice cream Parlour(5kms from Mandya)
The joy of cycling had been sounding all alien in this stretch which was marked by incessant ups and almost no down stretches, the energy fuel tank was almost hitting on the brink of extinction leading to exhaustion. I received a couple of phone calls which led to missing out on trailing behind Rajesh. By the way meet Rajesh, my close trekking pal and the Himalayan cyclist, also a marathon runner. The guy is never short of energy, his endurance and stamina just keeps him going.

I did reach Mandya soon although lost out on catching up behind Rajesh by 10-15 mins. Passing by the curious onlookers, some motor bikers, etc I enjoyed this weird attention and the look that they would give. Bought a dozen full of sweet tasty Jack fruits on the way and proceeded to the ice cream parlor where Rajesh had been waiting.

I finally made it to the ice cream parlour, this shop did sound like an oasis in a desert. Here it was time to fuel up the fuel tank , Not of the cycle though but the human machine that had been rolling out 1000’s of Newtons of Muscular force on the pedal, Also it was time to cool the bums for which the saddle no longer appeared like a seat, instead a bed of thorns .
Enjoyed the milk shakes, the ice creams and the jack fruits at the ice cream parlour.

Lap 4:
Ice Parlor- Srirangapattna Check Post

We did leave this oasis ice cream parlor in 20 mins. This time I was pretty determined to battle it out, The body which was the silent rebellion to break inertia had no chance to act, the mind all set to break in, took control of the resilient body and thus I took the lead. The saga of the Up stretches continued to daunt us but this time I wasn’t the one to give up. Took a lead ahead of Rajesh amidst unsupportive winds and soon crossed Srirangapattna to take the final pit stop which was basically a ‘pee’ break.
Hit back on the Road soon in 10 mins to take on the final stretch of 12kms

Lap 5:
Srirangapattna Check Post – Mysore(Columbia Asia Hospital)

The joy had already mustered into the minds, the traffic was getting thicker and thicker which meant that we were approaching the city, Cheers of joy had silently made its way into my mind, indeed I had finished cycling to Mysore. The city, the historical capital of Mysore State, to which I had been endless number of times in life by various means of transports like bikes, trains, buses, cars, etc. This very moment had been the moment of realization that I had cycled all the way to Mysore, covering a staggering 155kms from my home. A distance that used to take 3 hours in Train, 2.30 hours in Bus, 1.45 mins by car (My personal best Record) now took just over 6.30 hours by the cycle. This beautiful man made vehicle that came without a drive/motor, the vehicle that had been an epitome of my childhood was now also a part of my adulthood.
Every curve that figures on the SH-17 will now firmly register in memory, the sweet reminiscence of which shall reoccur within me every time I hit this road on any vehicle. The joy of carrying yourself in motion all by yourself for such a distance is a definite feeling of accomplishment to cherish for days to come.
The charming lady in the red, my KHS-Alite 150 was a perfect companion on road. She supports you fully be it on any difficult stretch, no matter what the angle of climb, and on a flat road I shouldn’t point a thing in cruising at anything less than 30kmphr.

@mysore:

We headed to Ambareesh’s house at Saraswathipuram, had a very tasty filling lunch, and spent the rest of the Afternoon lazy and down watching political drama on the television and seeing Dravid score that 100 in first innings of the second test.
Later on that evening cancelled plans to Cycle to Nanjangud owing to Rains and a dangerous Road. Instead went to DJ Urs Road to catch glimpse of many a things that I can’t really talk about.
Settled down for the day at Rajesh’s friend’s house enjoying the warm hospitality that this person offered. Caught with a sound Sleep, here sound meant Sound literally.

Day 2:

Woke up by 6 Got ready by 8 after finishing the breakfast headed to Nanjangud on Motobike. I was overwhelmed seeing Kabini River flowing in full splendor at this place. We were able to make it back to mysore by 10 AM and headed on to Railway Station.

We booked 2 of our cycles as parcels soon and left the city by Mys- Ypr Express that left Mysore by 12:10 and reached Bangalore by 3:00
Took some formalities to release the cycle at the station in Bangalore, yet we comfortably made it back home by 4.

Not much fan fare, no hue, no cry, the ride had come to an end.

Manthralaya with Ajji & Thata

My Grandparents had been insisting that they be taken to Manthralaya for quite sometime now. This trip having been on cards from May had been postponed, cancelled for various reasons. The non-Availability of train tickets to this place had been a major detering factor and it would be difficult for them to travel on a bus or otherwise.

I was lucky to have found a Tatkal ticket this Sunday the 10th on Udyaan Express for 12th and plans were already rolling for what could turn out into a great trip edging more towards the divinity angle. A Return ticket was booked on Ahmedabad Express for the evening of 13th.

My Ajji & Thatha ( Mr Narayana and Mrs Subbama)

Left the office early on 12th and reached home. Soon we made it to the station in car and boarded the Udyaan Express. The very unfateful train that would reach Mumbai on the 13th, The very unfateful day when 3 explosions rocked the city after 26/11. Luckily we needed to get down the train at "Manthralayam Road" Station and let the train go further.

Manthralayam:
The sleepy town by the banks of Thungabhadra River in the District of Kurnool, vastly Underdeveloped, trying to recover from the deluge that the floods brought in last year.

We made it to the room by 6:30 AM, after hiring an auto from the station to the temple. Quickly got ready to enter inside the temple for an ecclesiastic time with Lord Raghavendra Swamiji's Sannidhi.

The temple surely brings in that sense of devotion to even the more lighter souls like me who are cut loose. The brindavan which is the epi centre of the attraction houses the live samadhi of Sri Sri Raghavendra Swamiji who lived and traversed during the 16th Century. We finish all the Darshan and the poojas by around 9:30 and are left with doing nothing untill lunch. I just cashed in this oppertunity and put several Rounds(Pradhakshine) around the Temple(Sanctom Sanctorum).

It was soon 12PM and lunch time was here. This pious meal served for the dedicated lot was marked by Rice delicacies of various kinds. I had a strong feeling that i ended up eating half a kg of rice for the meal.

Post lunch we headed on Panchamukhi temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman on the other banks of Thungabhadra River. This bank belongs to Raichur district of Karnataka , while Manthralayam was with AP. Since there is no water transport to cross the river, we took an auto which needed to take a long detour and finally reach panchamukhi, covering close to 20 kms for a distance that had been under 4kms crossing the river. The dilipated state of the road, the miseries that the recent floods had brought to this area is definitely an eye opener for the urban lot who are stuck realising their material dreams, succeeding through competition, Win by pull/Push.

These areas lack even the basic sanitation facilities. The water from the houses are directly let into the pits dug up in front of the house. This stagnating impure water wastes is a live breeding ground for insects, an open invitation for anybody wanting to pick up diseases. The crumbling infrastructure like the roads, transportation needs a complete facelift.

Yet, people have a sustained economic system that is more or less near the poverty line, there is absolutely no dearth for the curiosity on their face, a occasional smile. Even though i could see huts and similar such houses all along the way, these huts were colorful, some of them even had a DTH antenna at their Top :-)

We made it soon to Panchamukhi, a place where Sri Raghavendra Swamiji once meditated below the rocks for 12 long years, and it was at this place where gods appeared before him and entrusted him with the mission of carrying himself to Manthralayam where he would permanently rest in peace. One could see some of the natural Rock formations where a huge rock rests miraculously on small chunk of rock and it stands firm for ages now.

While on the way back we needed to pass through the thungabadra river Bridge that forms the road link between AP and Karnataka. This bridge had been washed away completely with the floods last year. one could see chunks of portions of bridge fallen into the river and rubbles of road leading to the bridge. While the new bridge is in the phase of construction , a temparory bridge has been laid for the light vehicular movement

We made it back soon to Manthralayam, the same bumpy ride, the Auto that seems to miss out on Shock absorbers. We packed bags and left for the Railway station. The ahmedabad Express arrived on the platform late by 20 mins, yet elegantly made it to Bangalore just in time the next day morning.

The short trip had thus finally ended, My grandparents had been happy about seeing the god and luckily they finished the trip without Much strain

Soligere- Up, Up and Above

The Monsoon of 2011 has finally arrived. Although it has taken off to a slow start, the clouds bursting open is always a joyful moment that brings in much awaited smiles across regions in a country like ours. It is also the right moment to loose the coveted tag of a so called " Urban Dweller", Someone like me who's lost in a city whose traffic and infrastructure seems to cripple to worse states day after day.

So i had been thinking of taking a break for a simple easy get away somewhere in the outskirts of Bangalore and "Soligere" almost momentarily occurred to my mind. I had been to this beautiful place last year as a part of the Sangama-Muthathi Trek. It was during this time did i actually realize that not so far away from Bangalore, can one actually find some splendid Water bodies. following on the Trail of Mother River Cauvery, i had come across some amazing landscapes.

Coming to 2011, a year that hasn't had anything in store for me, half of the year had already passed staying indoor and refraining from any notable outdoors or camping. The weekend of July on 3rd had been here and i had decided that i shall be biking to Soligere. This Serene place is not so far away from Bangalore, yet not near. This place where river flows far and stretched, this place where the only sound that i could hear was that of the animals and birds, this place where only a handful of people resided.

Indeed this place is over a 100kms from Bangalore and has an environment that totally transcends into a different kind. The place not known for many people, The people who are always heading to Nandi hills or Skandagiri to add more litter and thrash. I'm hurt seeing the plight of Skandagiri which was once a quiet hill with few stone structures and some magnificent views turning into a dump yard for people who throng to this place on the weekends. Luckily Soligere has shied away from the attention which has in turn done more good to the place and has helped retain its austere surroundings completely untouched and unharmed.

The place impressed me as much as it did an year ago. So what is this place all about,?what does it really have in store for me ?

Well, Soligere is a small village lost in a hillock off Sathnur, Kanakpura Taluk of Ramnagara District. The place has a settlement of over 10-15 families amounting to less than 40 people who mainly depend on agriculture, livestock rearing and crafts for their livelihood. As one reach the top of the Soligere hill, there is no human settlement and the hill ends with a beautiful view point.

This view point opens up a wide panoramic landscape to the soul who needs to trek to the top as there is no motorable road. (People wanting to damage their bikes could certainly do some off road biking). One could see Cauvery river flowing swiftly in wide and winding trails , cutting across the mountains, flourishing lush green vegetation that forms Sathnur and Muthathi Forest Range. One could see places as far as Shivanasamudra hydro project, Shimsha , etc from this view point. The even more luckier souls could spot a herd of Wild Elephants, Bears or Small Animals. I believe the photos shot from my mobile will do the rest of the talking about the place.

The ever blowing winds seem like they were here to take away all the worries of a man along with them as they brush against you. Nature certainly takes the front seat and everything else seems to be in the backseat. A feeling of surrender to the mother nature seeps in and leaves you spell bounded. A watch tower cum guest house provides relief from winds and rains, it also doubles up as a place for night camping.

My dear friend Shyam had luckily accomponied me to this wonderful place, I'm sure he enjoyed as much as i did.

A place to visit on a weekend, to spend some time in process of nothingness, a small nap, or to get lost watching those huge and wide landscapes, to watch the river flowing in sheer elegance, to get lost and to be found. to discover, to learn, to unlearn. Soligere is certainly the one place for people who want to drive away from those popular tourist spots overflowing with people and business. The ideal place for a quiet retreat with family or friends. A place to hang out and refresh, rejuvenate your minds and body.

Note:

The last motor able stretch for 4 wheelers ends at 5kms from the view point, That means to say that people heading out on cars need to trek along the mud route for 5kms.

The last motor able stretch for 2 wheelers ends at 1km from the view point. That means to say that people trying the off roading will need to trek just 1km to the top.

The Super Moon trails

The new year did certainly start of with a bang with a trek from Ankola to Gokarna,
through the untouched, Unharmed Virgin beaches along the Konkan coast. Wading our way through the sand, the Rocks, The terrains, Dry land, The fisherman colonies, etc was certainly a great pump up to start the year with .

Yet the Summer had already made an impression on my mind, The dwindling Leaves from my account and the trees, the never ending deadlines, The year end targets, the owes of Production at the office would never let me out on anymore treks. In the meanwhile my new camera had made its way from a far country and it was all ready to be tested. The long awaited marriages of my cousins in the family was also a big event that needed sufficient preparation.

Yet there was always time to catch up with some miniature trips and treks in and around Bangalore . The bird Photography event to Shivanahalli was one such that is worth mentioning. I feel stunned at times just wondering if such a serene place that close to bangalore can ever exist. The bike ride to The pyramid valley and Vadderahalli lake both on kanakpura road also gave in much needed relief by the weekends.

March had finally arrived. The world has been very unfortunate to bear the devastations happening at Japan. My heart pains to see the country, once victim of the Nuclear warfare is again battling out Nuclear warfare of another Kind this time with their own establishments turning back against them. The Worlds 3rd largest nuclear power generating nation has been Battling out to dowse the temperatures of their Nuclear reactors which have been impending a major Carnage. Adding more fuel to the flame was the speculations about the March 19th being the " Super Moon day".

I had been planning to take the night out on 19th for a moonlight trek, The last moonlight trek to Skandagiri had turned out to be a good one, except the fact that i spent the whole of the sunday sleeping once back from the trek. Lakshmish Chipped in with an idea to go out on 19th for the moonlight photography and it sounded like a great idea. My trek buddies, the trusted entries were soon informed and we had a plan on cards in minutes.

We left the home on 5:30 in the evening on saturday, Me and lakshmish started off and headed to Lalbagh to take a few snips of the moon rising up the horizon. The fading day light, the trees provided a perfect backdrop to get started in click the moon. To remember the moon, for one it looked really big, the pale yellow color was more so because it was still daylight. We did managed to click a few pics and quickly catch up on all the action that had been happening on the venue, (Lalbagh has for long been a lovers hot spot)

Left Lalbagh by 7:20 PM and headed to Allianz francise where Jay was supposed to catch up. The place often hoists good Musical events and film festivals showcasing artists and movies from the world over. Tonight it was people from the reunion island performing their share of music. The Show catch up well with us eventually, The people in the groups put in a lot of efforts to showcase their music, tunes, instruments which was well recieved.

The auditorium eventually made way for some dance by the audiences. We were well of
clicking snaps and relishing their music. The show ended at 9:30. We left the venue and were supposed to pick up Rajesh on the way at Mathikere. He had been cycling close to 24 hours now being back from Nandhi hills. After a quick break for a fruit juice , we headed of to Dinner. After the dinner at New BEL road with Rotis and Biryani's(VEG!!!!). The team headed to Hesaraghatta for some more photography

Stopped by for fuelling up near CMTI and headed towards the Hesarghatta Juntion. The well laid and maintained empty roads are anybodys delight. Lakshmish seems to pep up the throttle and was in no mood to drive below 80.

Soon we were at Hesaraghatta, the small village in a festive mood today as it had been the Jatre(Village festival, worshipping the main deity of the village). from the Dolu kunitha to the Dolls, to the Raja, Rani Horses, every other attraction having made it to the festival. Shot a few pics and headed for the lake.

@the Lake 12:30 AM

Touted as one of the biggest lakes in and around bangalore, The hesaraghatta lake is so big that any person passing by is bound to take due notice of this enormous waterbody. Yet we having been there at the peak of the dry season gave us a glimpse of an entirely different lake. The area looked like a huge play ground with patches of water forming islands. Yet the walk along the tank bund was a good one. The moonlight pathand the breeze made way for a light conversation and some humorous moments among the 4 of us. Some of the true fans of OPUS had been going aloud on the pub. Trying to recollect some of the memoirs of the musical events, we just the tempo on.

Soon got into the tank bed which is a good 20 feet below the tank bund and started taking clicking pics. The breeze that came along now was fatalistic, The chilling breeze almost made us feel cold almost immediately. Couldn't hold on here for long, did manage to take a group pic and leave almost immediately

Hit back on the roads at 1:30 AM. The Drop facility extended to all the participants ensured they got back home safely, i managed to get home by 3:00 AM. Special thanks to Lakshmish for bringing his car and driving it all alone :) all throughout.

THE THINGS THAT WERE PART OF THE PLAN WHICH WE DID MISS OUT

1. Bird photography the next morning
2. The visit to the Indo-Danish Cattle farm near the lake
3. The Visit to the Rabbit farm and the Turkey farm

The night had been well spent, the company kept me engaged, the moon although not on the limelight of the trip had still made it hugely into the lens of my Camera.

The trip was more of a quick getaway trying to catch up doing some of the odd things

My new gear

The wait is finally over. The Camera has finally landed.

After a pain sticking wait , my new outdoor gear, a new gateway to keeping moments crisp and sharp is here. The Cannon SX30 seems to clearly make a statement and i'm quite impressed with its picture quality and a staggering 35x zoom that doesn't disappoint at all.

The decision to go for this model came after a pedantic evaluation into first determining the depth of my pocket and the camera available for this depth. Also under considerations were the features, the ability to zoom, be able to capture wild life and those winged beauties. Keeping in line my outdoor traveling policy of "travel light". One camera that seem to simply fit custom into all these criteria was the sx30.

Although there was a clear trade off on a lot of aspects, it does seem like the valid and reasonable decision.

Shall look forward to capturing and binding more real life moments, incidents, beauties , nature with the camera.

The Republic day flower show at Lalbagh

The otherwise lazy sunday in the last week of Jan, did make way for a swift visit to lalbagh. Although dissapointed with an overly priced tickets, to a very average flower show

I did manage to shoot some snaps. Here they're
